This listing is for a vintage Japanese kimono, likely meant for summer wear.

The vertical patterning is two-fold:  wide bands alternating in purple and light gray, and another layer of very thin vertical stripes that we believe is meant to represent traditional thin bamboo blinds that were commonly used in Japanese houses.  They allow a breeze to pass but keep out the bright sun or nosy passers-by.

Looking "through" the blinds, we see shadowy florals that might be swaying in the summer breeze.

The fabric is a silk but with a slightly rough feel - perhaps texture to allow some air to pass through. The kimono is liked however, with white above and purple below the waist.

Basting stitches along the edges suggest the kimono was never worn (since this is how it comes from the tailor) or that it was re-stitched for storage as a well-cared for treasure.

We do offer hanging rods for displaying kimono - add one from the tab below if desired. If you'd like to wear this kimono with a traditional obi, browse our Obi For Sale page; or for a more casual look, add a Simple Sash at check out.

See video below for how to put on a kimono and how the shibori technique is done.
