This listing is for a vintage Japanese futon cover or large household cloth. These were often used for bedding or protective coverings, but today it is more of a collectible example of Japanese folk textile artistry valued for its craftmanship, indigo coloration, and striking visual impact.

This fabric is indigo-dyed cotton, designed in the kumo (spiderweb) shibori technique, where sections of the fabric are intricately bound and resisted before dyeing to create radiating, web-like bursts of pattern. The deep and pale indigo tones play across a repeating design of rounded motifs with detailed centers. The irregular lines and tonal variations leave no doubt that this was done with an expert hand.

There are significant signs of age - boro patching, tears, and discoloration - the embodiment of wabi-sabi aesthetics. It began as a humble household item and was well-used and likely well-loved, we hope it finds a new home where it will be appreciated.  Much of the panels can be upcycled and the boro patching could be framed as folk art.

Watch the video below about the indigo dyeing process.
