This listing is a vintage Japanese folding fan (sensu in Japanese). See videos below on how the paper version of these fans are made - it's quite an elaborate and precise process. Dance fans are larger, wider, and sturdier than ones made for everyday use

This fan is named for the two Japanese hiragana characters in red: ka and ki. They're arranged in a square, in bright red, on both sides. There is another set of the same characters - but they are smaller and only outlined in red - on the left side of the fan.

This is definately an old fan - there are discolorations from age and some moisture damage at one end. But still quite usable and unique.
