Description
This listing is for a traditional vintage furisode kimono originally created for a young, unmarried woman. Furisode are worn for formal events, such as Seijin-no-hi (
Coming of Age Day
, sometimes translated as Adults Day) in early January. Furisode are also worn for weddings, recitals, receptions, and other celebrations calling for formal attire. Note the long sleeves (
furi
= long,
sode
= sleeves) sometimes called "butterfly sleeves", which flow with grace when she gestures, attracting male attention!
This furisode is a breath-taking work of art, with a sweeping white stream of florals arching back and forth to create the illusion of movement against a cobalt night sky. Dozens of flowers fill the space except where that rich blue-purple color comes through.
Several bright coral peonies pop out from the other florals - ume plum blossoms, maple leaves and more - which are delicately shaded. As with any white vintage piece, there are some slight signs of aging - see photo - but we feel that the dazzle of the design overcomes these minor flaws. And it is priced accordingly.
The video below shows some beautiful examples of how these are worn traditionally and how the design is created.
