Description

This listing is for a Meiji Era woodblock (ukiyo-e) print of a formal kimono. These woodblocks were popular up until the early 1900s, bound into a catalog and shown to perspective customers. Many of these catalog booklets were taken apart to preserve the prints as art, and this is no doubt where this treasure comes from.

The kimono features a blue sky at the shoulder, with a small sparrow flying upwards. At the hemline are several bundles of firewood scattered about. The detail on the bird and wood was done by hand with a delicate brush of only a few hairs.

The art comes under glass in a simple frame, but open the frame to see the back of the matting which confirms (by the stamp of the antique seller) that this is indeed a woodblock print from 1896.

We understand that similar works of this age can bring higher prices but we are happy to pass this along at this price to a kimono- or art-lover who will appreciate it. We know kimono, we don't know as much about ukiyo-e.
