Description

This listing is for a pair of sleeves from a vintage Japanese haori (kimono jacket). It's sad, but sometimes vintage kimono come to us with blemishes that make them unsellable to wear, but we salvage what remains and hope it will find a home with an artisan, crafter, quilter, collector, or Japanophile and offer inspiration for a future project.

These sleeves are from a contemporary (1980s?) haori and features three sets of ningyo parading along. Ningyo are "imperial dolls", often depicted as roly-poly cherubs at play. In this case, they are marching in a daimyo parade - the annual sojourn that Edo Period lords made to the emperor to pay their respects (and their taxes). The heavy cases being carried are no doubt filled with rice or other tributes to the regional shogun.

The little figures' faces have delicate features, as the lacquered cases and banners they carry were also masterfully painted. Golden hillsides in the distance offer perspective on their trek.

The background color is a very light peach color. Note the one area of a few blemishes on the back of one sleeve.

Each sleeve is 13" wide and 19" long. (Open up the seams to get two 28" panels.) The lining features a zen rock garden motif - bonus fabric!

Silk. Excellent condition other than the blemish shown.
