"Tiny Wrists" Noragi Kimono

An old and quite unusual piece. Noragi is the name for the clothing farmers and rural workers wear in the countryside of Japan.

This garment is quite small, with very narrow sleeves. In fact the wrists of each sleeve have two small metal clips sewn in on one side and threaded loops on the other to keep the sleeve tight at the wrist. The wrist measurement, when closed with these clips is only 7" around.

This garment is pieced and patched and no doubt full of its own stories. The bodice is an indigo ikat (also called kasuri) weave in a checkerboard pattern of yellow and white dots and grids. The collar is black cotton and the sleeves are solid indigo blue.

The skirt portion of the garment is a vertical banded pattern - typical of countryside kimono - in grays and maroon and black. There are deliberate, seamed splits on each side seam, which is atypical of a traditional kimono, but would allow a wider range of motion for the wearer.

The bodice lining has many signs of wear and use and the lower lining is a beautifully faded light indigo blue. Quite a collector's piece.
