"Rifle Association" Indigo Hanten

An unusual and quite collectible indigo piece. The crossed rifle motif on the back is something we've never seen in 25+ years in the business.

The hanten belonged to a member of the rifle association of Kumano Shrine. There are Kumano Shrines all over Japan, including one in Kyoto, but there's no indication of location on this hanten.

Large red kanji on the back. One lapel in the front says Kumano Jinja (Kumano Shrine) and the other lapel says teppo ren which means rifle.

Beautiful cresting waves surge up from the hem. Brown cotton trim at the sleeve edges can be turned up as a cuff. Short split on both side seams design to allow freer movement of the arms during practice, no doubt.

Some signs of age and wear, fading at the collar and a small patch visible on the inside, see photos. Still, wearable, displayable and quite collectible.

Dyed with natural indigo. See video below on indigo dyeing in Japan.
