Description

"Sune Ate Set 5" Vintage Shin Guards

Sune ate sometimes refers to the armored shin guards that samurai wore into battle, but the ones listed here are the farming version.

Using little metal clasps tucked into sewn loops and simple ties, these little pieces of cloth covered the shins of Japanese farmers to protect themselves and their clothing from thorns and branches as they worked the fields.

This is a pair in a very dark indigo blue, with clips but with a very large tear on one, see photos. Cool tapered shape. They are valuable for their story, as a pattern for making your own, or for the indigo cotton they're made from.

Indigo was often used for these because it is said to deter snakes and insects. Interested in natural indigo dyeing? See video below for how this is done in Japan.
