Description

"Flourish" Child's Hanten

Very vintage, small sized child's indigo cotton hanten - sometimes called a happi coat. No telling how old it is.

The back features a large red kanji often used for festivals - it says sakeru meaning to flourish.

The overall vertical chain patterning is a traditional motif called tsunagi, which means to connect. These hanten were usually worn by all members of a group during a parade or festival. Perhaps this motif shows the bonds of the group.

Indigo was often used to dye these festive jackets. See video below on indigo dyeing in Japan.

Very collectible, great as a display.
