"Dragon Tiger" Indigo Sashiko Hanten

Deep, dark indigo blue - almost black - cotton hanten jacket. On the back are two overlapping crests - tomoe and two bars. These crests are likely to have some association with "dragon" and "tiger" because the kanji lettering on the left front collar says ryuko kai (dragon tiger group).

On the right front collar is reads Hanshu Arai, but we aren't sure what that refers to. The name of the original owner Hataya Taku, is embroidered at the bottom right.

The fabric features sashiko stitching over the entire jacket - quite costly in time and money and requiring mastery of the technique. Surprisingly, the white of the crests seems to have been stencil on top but not dyed all the way through the fabric. The blue stitching on top of the white is the desired effect of the sashiko. And there's a little pocket sewn into the left inside panel. Quite wearable, but would also make a dramatic display.

Indigo was preferred for these types of jackets. See video below about indigo dyeing in Japan.
