"Kendogi" Indigo Hanten

This cotton indigo hanten is not very old - maybe from the 1980s? - but it was well worn and offers a great casual jacket to wear over jeans.

It is a jacket worn by kendo practioners. Kendo is a Japanese martial art of sword fighting - still very popular in Japan. The kendo uniform usually includes a jacket like this - called a kendogi - worn over hakama pants and closes with a set of small ties, see photos.

The cotton fabric has a woven texture meant to imitate sashiko (hand stitching). The manufacturer's tag is sewn into the neck seam and also on the front right hem; the original owner's name is embroidered in orange.

Indigo was preferred for these types of jackets. See video below about indigo dyeing in Japan.
