Description

This is a vintage kimono jacket, called a haori, made for a man. The lining of men's haori jackets often depict a scene or motif that was of special interest to the original owner. We display these haori inside out to feature the lining when it is unique. Can you wear it inside out? Sure, why not. But certainly you would want to display it inside out as a decor piece.

This haori features an elegant drawing with simple lines drawn in sumie ink with an experienced hand on the brush. Simple lines depict a seaside scene, with boats tied to the shore, a small hut peeking around the corner, Mt. Fuji towering in the background. The light pinkish coloring on the sleeves and bodice soften the scene even more. Interesting - there are narrow darts sewn on each shoulder and some piecing in the corner of each sleeve.

The outer fabric is a black, light weight silk, with basting stitches on the sleeves which suggests that the haori was never worn, since this removable stitiching is how the jacket would come from the tailor. All of the stitching is hidden, so these jackets can normally be displayed or worn (in the West, at least) either way.

See the video below on how these traditional jackets are worn these days!
