Description

This is a vintage kimono jacket, called a haori, made for a man. The lining of men's haori jackets often depict a scene or motif that was of special interest to the original owner. We display these haori inside out to feature the lining when it is unique. Can you wear it inside out? Sure, why not. But certainly you would want to display it inside out as a decor piece.

This haori featur a large scale, beautifully painted noh characters that really pop out from the cream silk background. The details of the costume - see the cranes? see his feet? - are really well done. The larger character is dancing, it seems. The other seated character is small and unassuming, but no doubt has more significance than his size suggests. Note the detail on the costumes - both figures seem to be carved from a block of wood...?

The outer fabric is a blue and black oshima summer weight weave that is light and soft, not the more stiff and crisp versions we more often get. All of the stitching is hidden, so these jackets can normally be displayed or worn (in the West, at least) either way.

See the video below on how these traditional jackets are worn these days!
