Description

Kougou (or kogo) is a small, decorative vessel used to burn incense during a traditional Japanese tea ceremony, at a temple, or in the home.

This listing is for a set of two kougou - a pair depicting an old man and an old woman, characters from the classic Japanese fairy tale: Shita-kiri Suzume, the tongue-cut sparrow. Watch the video below to hear this folktale story. The two kougou are matched in celadon color, size and design, making for a delightful collectible set.

The top fits precisely into the base, which has a smaller scooped out area where the incense would rest.

See video below for a demonstration of Kodo, the traditional Japanese incense ceremony. It doesn't feature kougou boxes, unfortunately, but it is still worth viewing.
