Description

Kougou (or kogo) is a small, decorative vessel used to burn incense during a traditional Japanese tea ceremony, at a temple, or in the home.

This kougou is a porcelain dog (inu in Japanese), with a crackle in the white glaze, blue detailing on the head and base, and a little brown nose. It could be a lion, given the dark mane, but it looks more like a dog to us.

The top fits precisely into the base, which has a smaller scooped out area where the incense would rest.

See video below for a demonstration of Kodo, the traditional Japanese incense ceremony. It doesn't feature kougou boxes, unfortunately, but it is still worth viewing.
