This vintage Japanese haori jacket would have been worn on top of a vintage kimono on a chilly day.

A stenciled delight, this one. The pattern of mums and curling arabesques was created with several katagami stencils, one for each color in the design. See video below for more on this process.

The background fabric might be a silk-linen blend, giving body to the drape of the jacket. Moreover, there seems to be some tone-on-tone imagery in the fabric that catches the light.

The colors are lovely - deep red alternating with a rich golden brown - offering a warm, welcoming feeling. Perhaps welcoming Fall?

Haori do not cross over or tie with a sash, like a kimono does - they are meant to be worn open to reveal a bit of what is worn beneath. We do offer haori himo - the little woven ties that are hooked to the little fabric loops that you'll find on at the mid-front of the haori - but they are sold separately.
