This vintage Japanese haori jacket would have been worn on top of a vintage kimono on a chilly day. The retro feel of the patterning suggests it might be from the 1950s or 1960s.

The cream-colored silk has a light, crepe texture. The pattern of overlapping leaves and blossoms in shades of golden and dark brown offer a warm autumn feeling.

The pattern was applied with several katagami stencils - see video below for how these are made and used. Haori do not cross over or tie with a sash, like a kimono does - they are meant to be worn open to reveal a bit of what is worn beneath.

All of the stitching is hidden (since it was hand-sewn) so technically these haori jackets are reversible. Sometimes the lining is as pretty as the outer jacket!
