Called a juban in Japanese, this vintage Japanese kimono was meant to be worn as an under layer. This is a very formal juban - note the long sleeves!

This kimono is a soft peach color with a weave of overlapping mums in the silk jacquard. It is lined and there is a layer of fine paper between the under- and over-collars.

This juban was made to be worn beneath a formal furisode (long sleeved) kimono - it would have been made-to-order so that the long sleeves fit exactly into the long sleeves of the furisode.

There is a darkened area at the fold lines on each sleeve - see photos - but it is so symmetrical that it could almost seem deliberate. We do consider it to be a "blemish", however.

This kimono comes with the obijime cord shown to use as a belt for casual wear.

The over-collar (called an eri), is the only part of this undergarment that the public would see when it is worn traditionally, underneath a kimono. Eri are basted on top of a plain cotton collar and removed for washing or to be replaced for a more formal version when called for.
