Description

This listing is for a vintage happi coat - typically worn for parades or festivals, and usually decorated with auspicious designs or kanji that refer to an event sponsor, community organization, or even the town government.

The large characters around the body of the jacket are an ancient version of modern kanji, and unfortunately we do not know what it says, but they seem to be a stylized version of the top two white kanji on the collar.

We called this "Center House" because the large white kanji on the back seems to be the kanji for center or middle underneath the roof of a house.

A deep indigo blue. Look closely at the larger gray kanji to see that they were outlined with a resist but a lighter version of the resist was used to fill in the lettering. You can see the handwork through the mottling of the resist paste.

Hand stitched. One small hole on the right shoulder, see photo.

See video below for how Japanese indigo is processed and the fabrics are dyed and woven.
