This vintage Japanese haori jacket would have been worn on top of a vintage kimono on a chilly day. The retro feel of the patterning suggests it might be from the 1950s or 1960s.

Though it may have a pinkish cast in the photos, this haori is red with black, gray and silver. Densely hand-brushed red and black swirls were painted against a cream silk and then a stenciled layer of thin silver lines was the final step. Pretty floral lining.

Haori do not cross over or tie with a sash, like a kimono does - they are meant to be worn open to reveal a bit of what is worn beneath.

All of the stitching is hidden (since it was hand-sewn) so technically these haori jackets are reversible. Sometimes the lining is as pretty as the outer jacket!
