Description

In Japan, noren ("door curtains") provide a bit of privacy between rooms or between the home and the street. They can also serve as window treatments or interior design elements in a western home.

This little two-panel noren is made from the collar of a woman's haori jacket. The shibori half - hundreds of white dots on the deep wine colored silk - were tied by hand. The silk has a mum jacquard that you can see well on the solid color side.

So yes, the width of each panel is only half-covered with shibori because the plain side would have been folded inside the collar to give it more bulk. Why pay to have the entire width covered in shibori (an expensive process) if only one side will be visible?

The top features a 2" sleeve that would fit a tension or curtain rod (1" diameter is best) that would hold the noren at the top of the doorway/window.

Watch the videos below to see how shibori is done and to see how noren are used in modern-day Japan.
