In Japan, noren ("door curtains") provide a bit of privacy between rooms or between the home and the street. They can also serve as window treatments or interior design elements in a western home.

This gorgeous two-panel noren was made from a Taisho Era (1920s) ikat kimono in a very cool color combination. Florals and geometrics mixed in the design was very popular with this type of kimono back then.

The fabric was woven with the "ikat" technique, where the threads are dyed before being woven such that the design appears on the loom. The element edges are irregular, so this is sometimes called "fuzzy weaving", and it's an incredible thing to see. Watch the video below on how this is done.

The top features a 2" sleeve that would fit a tension or curtain rod (1" diameter is best) that would hold the noren at the top of the doorway/window.

Also below is an inspiring video of how noren are used in Japan.
