Description

A vintage man's kimono jacket (called a haori). The decorative lining on these formal jackets often reflects the hobbies, interests, or favorite myths of the original owner.

This haori is a casual jacket with a black-brown woven fabric on the outside and a silk lining that features brown and cream colored bands behind floating fan shapes. Each fan has three motifs inside - one seems to be an incense burner, another is a mandela with one kanji character in each section, but the others we cannot identify. And the kanji character lettering is in an ancient style that is nearly impossible for today's Japanese to read.

There is a slight blemish on the outer sleeve - see photo.

We display these men's haori inside out to reveal the lining - normally hidden from public view when worn, and only visible if glimpsed as it was taken off or hung up. All of the stitching is hidden, so these jackets can normally be displayed or worn (in the West, at least) either way.

See the video below on how men wear traditional Japanese garments.
