A vintage man's kimono jacket (called a haori). The decorative lining on these formal jackets often reflects the hobbies, interests, or favorite myths of the original owner.

This man's haori jacket features a painted rural scene of women carrying bundles of firewood on their backs, crossing a wooden bridge with a waterfall in the distance behind them. The scene is signed by the artist - see photo. While this is a lovely scene - soft and misty mountainside morning - there is another aspect of this jacket that merits attention.

This haori is unusual in that the outer silk fabric is a light color - a golden beige - whereas most men's haori are dark colored on the outside. This outer fabric is actually a type of ikat (or kasuri) weave where the threads are marked in black before they're dyed such that the small grid pattern appears once it is woven. Yes, it is a lot of work and skill required to get this effect, thus the higher price and desirability of the garment.

We display these men's haori inside out to reveal the lining - normally hidden from public view when worn, and only visible if glimpsed as it was taken off or hung up. All of the stitching is hidden, so these jackets can normally be displayed or worn (in the West, at least) either way.

See the video below on how men wear traditional Japanese garments.
