Gara gara is the sound they make when shaken - see video below for the pleasing sound.

The story associated with these rattles tells a tale of origination at the foot of Mount Hiko near Fukuoka in Kyushu. The rattle has a clear sound from the unglazed clay and is a talisman for protection against evil and natural disasters.
