This lisitng is for a traditional matoi. It represents a flag used in the Edo Period by firemen to notify the townspeople of a fire.

The matoi flag was flown from a rooftop where the fireman waved it in order to draw the attention of other firefighters who would then hurry to assist.

The tag on the bottom of the wooden stand tells us it was purchased in a shop in Asakusa in Tokyo.

There is some damage (see photo) but might be repairable.
