Description

This listing is for a vintage kimono jacket (haori) that comes from my personal collection. I've been collecting for over 25 years, and it's time to let go of some of the beauties I've held onto.

This haori is an example of upcycling that I could not resist. Older style kimono and haori were sometimes "modernized" by being overdyed or stenciled with a more contemporary design. That is the case here.

Yes, the surface design of florals, done with a bingata-style dye effect, is lively and lovely. But it does not hide the original patterning beneath - which were large florals and other motifs woven with metallic threads. Look even closer and you'll see the shadowing of kaneko shibori dots that were also part of the original design. (They are quite light and hard to see in a photo but are circled in the 11th photo.)

Yes, there are several noticeable signs of age, but you might still find this a wearable jacket, or a display piece that invites discussion, or something a kimono collector would really appreciate.

Haori do not cross over in the front or tie with a sash like a kimono does - they are meant to be worn open to reveal a glimpse of what is worn beneath. This haori, like most haori made prior to the 1950s, as sewn by hand with hidden stitches so that, technically, it's reversible.

Haori himo - the little woven ties that are hooked into the little fabric loops you'll find at the mid-front of the haori - can be added if you like. They're sold separately and for $5 we will choose a set that goes well with your haori. If you want to choose your own, we offer fancy ones in our shop - click here to see the current selection.
