Description

This listing is for a vintage kimono jacket (haori) that comes from my personal collection. I've been collecting for over 25 years, and it's time to let go of some of the beauties I've held onto.

This haori is a lively mix of shibori designs and color and I have loved it well but never wore or displayed it, sadly. The palette makes me think of summer, with a clear blue sky, perhaps a rolling cloud here and there, bright red roses and yellow buttercups. The pattern seems to have been designed free-hand (rather than with a stencil), and you can still see the tiny needle holes from the shibori binding around the edges of the elements.

See the video below to learn more about how shibori is done.

Yes, there are some blemishes from age (see photos) but it's still wearable or would make a lively decor piece. The lining is still in great condition in case you wanted to wear it inside out...

Haori do not cross over in the front or tie with a sash like a kimono does - they are meant to be worn open to reveal a glimpse of what is worn beneath. This haori, like most haori made prior to the 1950s, as sewn by hand with hidden stitches so that, technically, it's reversible.

Haori himo - the little woven ties that are hooked into the little fabric loops you'll find at the mid-front of the haori - can be added if you like. They're sold separately and for $5 we will choose a set that goes well with your haori. If you want to choose your own, we offer fancy ones in our shop - click here to see the current selection.
