The Tale of Murasaki
by Liza Dalby
This is a fictional account of what the life of Murasaki Shikibu might have been like. Murasaki wrote The Tale of Genji - said to be the world's first novel - when she was a courtesan in the 11th Century.

The novel is anchored in Japanese history, well-researched, and offers a glimpse into life in the court of Old Japan. If the author's name sounds familiar, you might remember Liza Dalby as the author of other books about geisha and she was the first Westerner to actually become a geisha.
From the Amazon.com description: "The Tale of Murasaki is the story of an enchanting time and an exotic place. Whether writing about mystical rice fields in the rainy mountains or the politics and intrigue of the royal court, Dalby breathes astonishing life into ancient Japan."

This book was purchased by us at Kyoto Kimono over the last few years. It's been in our library but we're downsizing and hope that it can be enjoyed by another kimono lover out there.
