Description

This is a man's heko obi - an informal silk version often worn with a casual kimono. It's a wide, very long, single layer of silk that is often solid color for most of the length with shibori patterning on each end. They are typically just wound around the waist a few times and tied in a loose knot in the back (see photo example).

This heko obi is a dark gray that fades to a lighter gray at the ends, with some brown/tan variation in the dye work that could be deliberate, could be fading from age.

The shibori design at each end features a ground of little kaneko shibori dots and a scattering of little wave shapes. Elsewhere along the "solid color" section of the obi you'll find diamond shapes created with yet more shibori kaneko dots..

Heko obi are also fashionable and warm as scarves or draped over a rod for an interior design piece.

See video below about the different styles of obi.
