Description

This listing is for a vintage happi coat - typically worn for parades or festivals, and usually decorated with auspicious designs or kanji that refer to an event sponsor, community organization, or even the town government.

The background is a medium blue with a pattern of plover flying above cresting waves across the bottom portion of the jacket. Above the plover is a roundel of rice sheaths - perhaps related to the group's logo.

On the front collar is blue with white kanji lettering that can be translated as "Taishogoto, Kinjoryu Style" and it refers to a type of instrument called a Nagoya Harp. Click here to learn more.

Watch the video below on the Gion Matsuri - a summer festival in Kyoto that features huge parade floats pulled by (mostly) men in happi coats! The coats are also worn by observers along the very crowded sidewalks!
