Description

This listing is for a vintage happi coat - typically worn for parades or festivals, and usually decorated with auspicious designs or kanji that refer to an event sponsor, community organization, or even the town government.

The background is a medium blue with two bands of an interlocking chain pattern in white along the lower portion of the jacket. The large, red kanji character on the back is "matsuri", meaning festival.

On the front collar are just two red kanji characters which can be translated as "Youngsters" or "Youth", and possibly refers to a group of teenagers or young adults marching together.

Watch the video below on the Gion Matsuri - a summer festival in Kyoto that features huge parade floats pulled by (mostly) men in happi coats! The coats are also worn by observers along the very crowded sidewalks!
