Description

This listing is for a very vintage happi coat - typically worn for parades or festivals, and usually decorated with auspicious designs or kanji that refer to an event sponsor, community organization, or even the town government.

The cotton is a very heavy (think denim jeans) cotton in a bright turquoise. The lower half of the jacket features a stencilled wave pattern that resembles a whale's tail to us, but it's also two cresting waves bouncing off each other.

The large red kanji character on the back refers to buddhist teachings or doctrine.

On the front collar is white kanji lettering that can be translated as "Elders of Ebisu" which is a district of Shibuya in Tokyo.

Watch the video below on the Gion Matsuri - a summer festival in Kyoto that features huge parade floats pulled by (mostly) men in happi coats! The coats are also worn by observers along the very crowded sidewalks!
