Description

This listing is for a vintage happi coat - typically worn for parades or festivals, and usually decorated with auspicious designs or kanji that refer to an event sponsor, community organization, or even the town government.

The background is a turquoise blue with a seigaiha (overlapping wave) pattern along the hem inwhite and dark blue. The large, red kanji character on the back is "matsuri", meaning festival.

On the front collar is white kanji lettering that is translated as "Mishima Hometown Festival". (Mishima is a city in central Japan, known for panoramic views of Mount Fuji from the Mishima Skywalk suspension bridge.)

Watch the video below on the Gion Matsuri - a summer festival in Kyoto that features huge parade floats pulled by (mostly) men in happi coats! The coats are also worn by observers along the very crowded sidewalks!
