This listing is for a vintage happi coat - typically worn for parades or festivals, and usually decorated with auspicious designs or kanji that refer to an event sponsor, community organization, or even the town government.

The background is a medium blue with a black collar. On the front left side is a stenciled image of a dragon and tiger - mythical imagery that is quite popular with Japanese vintage designs.

On the back is a pattern that stumps us. Many times a small college or high school group might design a happi coat for their members, and these occasionally include "inside jokes" - which we think is the case here. The general translation is roughly: "Do you eat carbohydrates? Sure looks like it...!" And the rest of the lettering seems to be the names of the group members.

Look closely to see that there is another tiger and dragon stenciled behind the white lettering on the back.

Watch the video below on the Gion Matsuri - a summer festival in Kyoto that features huge parade floats pulled by (mostly) men in happi coats! The coats are also worn by observers along the very crowded sidewalks!
