Description

This listing is for a vintage happi coat - typically worn for parades or festivals, and usually decorated with auspicious designs or kanji that refer to an event sponsor, community organization, or even the town government.

The background is a medium blue with a design in red and white. The large, red kanji character on the back is "matsuri", meaning festival. It is surrounded by spinning pinwheels that might refer to fireworks, and a checkered pattern around the hem.

On the front collar is white kanji lettering that is translated as "Nakaishiki District" and "Tenmangu Shrine".

Watch the video below on the Gion Matsuri - a summer festival in Kyoto that features huge parade floats pulled by (mostly) men in happi coats! The coats are also worn by observers along the very crowded sidewalks!
