This listing is for one yard of vintage lining silk salvaged from a vintage Japanese kimono jacket (haori). There are no seam lines at the edges so this lining was cut for a haori but was never sewn.

The fabric is very lightweight, light purple silk with a patterning of huge butterflies with four leaf-like wings in olive green. The pattern was created with the shibori (tie-dye) technique, as evidenced by the "scrunched" outline of the wings. The antennae were also made with tiny kaneko shibori and there are two large shibori circles hovering over each butterfly.

The standard width of all kimono fabric is between 13" and 14" and each length offered here falls within that width and is at least 36" (some are more generous cuts).

When we find vintage (circa 1950s but could be older or newer by two decades) Japanese kimono or haori (kimono jackets) in less-than-sellable condition due to fading, blemishes, or holes, we salvage what we can and offer it to artisans, quilters, crafters, and designers for project work.

So the fabric has been previously sewn and though we carefully deconstruct the kimono, previous seam lines, as well as minor blemishes, may need to be worked around or trimmed away. The inspiring designs, hand work, and the ageless beauty of vintage Japanese textiles make all the extra work so worthwhile.
