This is a vintage kimono jacket, called a haori, made for a man. The lining of men's haori jackets often depict a scene or motif that was of special interest to the original owner. We display these haori inside out to feature the lining when it is unique. Can you wear it inside out? Sure, why not. But certainly you would want to display it inside out as a decor piece.

This haori features an unusual and ethereal painted scene on the lining. It is unlikely that the scene has faded over time, though the effect is indeed foggy, misty and difficult to capture. What is doubly surprising is that several elements are embellished with hand embroidery along the edges. There is a boat towards the bottom of the scene, rolling clouds on the right side, and the outline of a building (a church?) to the left. Other buildings can be barely made out behind the church. Fascinating.

The outer fabric is black silk with a slightly brownish cast and a slight blemish on the right shoulder - see photo.

All of the stitching is hidden, so these jackets can normally be displayed or worn (in the West, at least) either way. See the video below on how these traditional jackets are worn these days!
