This is a vintage kimono jacket, called a haori, made for a man. The lining of men's haori jackets often depict a scene or motif that was of special interest to the original owner. We display these haori inside out to feature the lining when it is unique. Can you wear it inside out? Sure, why not. But certainly you would want to display it inside out as a decor piece.

This haori is a fantastic example of wearable art. The outer fabric is dorozome - mud dyed - silk which was quite coveted because of the dye process because traces of iron in the mud helps to strengthen the silk fibers. See video below for more on this incredible process.

Aside from the outer jacket desirability, consider the story told on the lining. Two sets of actors are depicted with masterful artistry. One is playing the game of "go" and the other seems to be students and teacher reviewing a lesson. The facial features are delicately drawn and each iteration was painted separately, so you'll discern very slight differences among them.

All of the stitching is hidden, so these jackets can normally be displayed or worn (in the West, at least) either way. See the video below on how these traditional jackets are worn these days!
