This listing is for a vintage Japanese kimono made for a young girl. There are (and were) few opportunities for little girls to wear kimono after the war, when western clothes were more common. So most post-war kimono for kids were for summer festivals or for formal occasions.

This kimono was made for wearing to a semi-formal event - perhaps to the Shichi-Go-San Festival when the girl was three and then seven years old. The design is quite festive with brightly colored imagery that includes three different temple pagodas. Silver stenciling creates a layered-stone detail on the walls below the pagodas.

This kimono is quite wearable - but please check the measurements against the child to confirm the fit before ordering. Kimono run small and remember that some of the length would be taken up at the waist when belted. It does not come with a sash but one can be purchased for $10 when you order.

Vintage Japanese children's kimono make eye-catching displays in spaces too small to accommodate a full sized kimono or haori.
