"Samurai Brocade" Wedding Kimono (Uchikake)

This is an antique Japanese uchikake wedding kimono - quite the collector's piece - and probably belongs in a museum.

This uchikake features a silvery background with a brocaded design of phoenix and fans in gold and bronze. This is a classic design from the Meiji Period and might have been a bridal kimono for someone of the samurai rank.

Don't miss the intricately embroidered wisteria crest - in gold threads - on the back below the neck.

Beautiful light blue-green lining with a crane jacquard.

There is a small hole on the back near the crest (see photo), but otherwise in excellent condition, especially considering the age of the garment. Shorter in length than some of the other uchikake kimono we have.

There are several types of Japanese wedding kimono (uchikake, kakeshita, shiromuku), but the uchikake is the heaviest and most colorful. It is meant to be worn on top of the kakeshita wedding kimono, and is not meant to be tied with an obi. Rather, it is draped over the shoulders and worn mostly for picture taking. These make amazing displays.
