Description

This is a vintage Japanese tomesode kimono - typically reserved for wearing to formal events. The kimono is black with only five white paulownia crests on the upper portion and a hemline design of lacquer boxes elaborately decorated in orange, red, and gold. Featured elements are treasure carts, mums, and paulownia florals.

The design was created with the yuzen technique, but also features embroidered couching and gold leaf details. See the videos below for how each of these is done.

The white lining that adds a bit more weight and formality to the kimono.

Tomesode (sometimes called kurosode or "Mother of the Bride" kimono) are typically black style tomesode kimono reserved for very formal occasions. There are always at least three - but usually five - family crests on the upper section (one at the neck, one on the back of each sleeve, and one on each side of the collar) and an elegant design that stretches across the entire hemline with more of the image in the front, where it would be seen best.
