Description

This is a vintage Japanese tomesode kimono - typically reserved for wearing to formal events. The kimono is black with only five white crests on the upper portion - and this crest is a combination of ferns and florals that we have never seen before. Quite unusual.

The elements of the hemline design suggest music and travel - possibly the focus of the event this kimono was originally made for or perhaps it was the hobby or interest of the original owner. You'll see a beautifully decorated koto (Japanese harp), a shakuhachi (Japanese flute) along with a traveler's straw hat decorated with maple leaves and a traveler's pouch, tied with tassled cording.

The design was created with the yuzen technique - stenciled and then colored by hand, with many of the elements outlined in gold leaf. See the videos below for how each of these is done.

The fact that the design was carried over to the inside lining panel suggests that this kimono was especially valued and valuable.

Tomesode (sometimes called kurosode or "Mother of the Bride" kimono) are typically black style tomesode kimono reserved for very formal occasions. There are always at least three - but usually five - family crests on the upper section (one at the neck, one on the back of each sleeve, and one on each side of the collar) and an elegant design that stretches across the entire hemline with more of the image in the front, where it would be seen best.
