Description

This is a vintage Japanese tomesode kimono - typically reserved for wearing to formal events. The kimono is black with only five white crests symbolizing a "well cover" on the upper portion.

The hemline design features a series of tall, mountain-like rocks as they would appear in a Japanese zen garden. Each element - including each of the tiny white lines, was drawn by hand. The rocks were then painted and finally embroidered along the top with gold threads that shimmer in the light. Single sprigs of grass appear elsewhere along the hemline, supplying that elusive balance in the design that is so important for the Japanese aesthetic.

So much hand work went into creating this kimono - see videos below to learn more about the steps that go into making something so fine.

There's a floating white lining that adds a bit more weight and formality to the kimono. There's also a slight of discoloration in the design - see photo - but we don't believe it detracts from the kimono being wearable or making a dramatic display.

Tomesode (sometimes called kurosode or "Mother of the Bride" kimono) are typically black style tomesode kimono reserved for very formal occasions. There are always at least three - but usually five - family crests on the upper section (one at the neck, one on the back of each sleeve, and one on each side of the collar) and an elegant design that stretches across the entire hemline with more of the image in the front, where it would be seen best.
