This is a vintage summer Japanese tomesode kimono - typically reserved for wearing to formal events. Summer versions of these - unlined with a light ro silk weave - are somewhat unusual. But this tomesode has the traditional black bodice with five white bellflower crests on the upper portion.

The hemline design is all about cool breezes - a much sought-after relief from the hot Japanese summers. Large, flowing green or gold sudare (bamboo blinds) curl as if blown by the wind - their tassels also floating in the air. Dotting the design are large medallions filled with florals and one filled with a bright orange phoenix. This bird, called an o-o or ho-o in Japanese, is embroidered with shiny silken threads to really capture your attention.

So much hand work went into creating this kimono - yuzen dyework, satin stitch embroidery and couching, and gold leaf accents. See the videos below to learn more about the steps that go into making kimono like this one.

Tomesode (sometimes called kurosode or "Mother of the Bride" kimono) are typically black style tomesode kimono reserved for very formal occasions. There are always at least three - but usually five - family crests on the upper section (one at the neck, one on the back of each sleeve, and one on each side of the collar) and an elegant design that stretches across the entire hemline with more of the image in the front, where it would be seen best.
