Description

This is a vintage Japanese tomesode kimono - typically reserved for wearing to formal events. The traditional black bodice has five white paulownia crests on the upper portion and the lower portion is filled with colorful patterning.

The hemline design features a small flock of white cranes flying over a seascape with rolling hills, rolling waves, with jagged outcroppings of rock that we find in places along the Japanese coastline. The palette that features periwinkle, gold, and greens is rare and lovely. One of the cranes is outlined with gold couching, and there's plenty of gold leaf reflecting in the waves and clouds.

So much hand work went into creating this kimono - yuzen dyework, couching embroidery and gold leaf accents. See the videos below to learn more about the steps that go into making kimono like this one.

Tomesode (sometimes called kurosode or "Mother of the Bride" kimono) are typically black style tomesode kimono reserved for very formal occasions. There are always at least three - but usually five - family crests on the upper section (one at the neck, one on the back of each sleeve, and one on each side of the collar) and an elegant design that stretches across the entire hemline with more of the image in the front, where it would be seen best.
