This is a vintage Japanese tomesode kimono - typically reserved for wearing to formal events. The traditional black bodice has five paulownia crests on the upper portion and the lower portion is filled with elaborate, elegant patterning.

The hemline design features an amazing collage of imagery that includes a traditional treasure cart laden with flowers, cranes, waves, plum blossoms, vases, and much more. Big, bold elements are balanced with delicately drawn ones to create an elegant design that befits any formal occasion.

So much hand work went into creating this kimono - yuzen, couching embroidery and gold leaf accents. See the videos below to learn more about the steps that go into making kimono like this one.

Tomesode (sometimes called kurosode or "Mother of the Bride" kimono) are typically black style tomesode kimono reserved for very formal occasions. There are always at least three - but usually five - family crests on the upper section (one at the neck, one on the back of each sleeve, and one on each side of the collar) and an elegant design that stretches across the entire hemline with more of the image in the front, where it would be seen best.
