This vintage (from the 1970s or 80s) Japanese kimono jacket (called a haori) features a stylized shippo motif that is both circular and angled - all created with the shibori technique. The background is a soft buttercream and the design is a reddish pink.

Haori do not cross over or tie with a sash, like a kimono does - they are meant to be worn open to reveal a bit of what is worn beneath.

All of the stitching is hidden (since it was hand-sewn) so technically these haori jackets are reversible. Sometimes the lining is as pretty as the outer jacket!

Shibori is "Japanese tie-dye", where an artisan stitches along a stenciled image on the fabric, pulling the threads tightly to create a resist. The fabric is then dyed and when the threads are released, the pattern is revealed. There are dozens of shibori techniques, with the most common these days called kaneko (referring to the spots on a fawn), where an often elaborate pattern is created by hundreds of tiny dots. Kyoto is famous for this kaneko style. Watch the video below to learn more.

We do offer haori himo - the little woven ties that are hooked to the little fabric loops that you'll find on at the mid-front of the haori - but they are sold separately. We'll select one that goes with this haori if you pick the Add A Himo Pair ($5) option above. To choose a pair of our fancier himo, CLICK HERE.
