"Kyoto Memories" Man's Haori

This is a vintage Japanese man's kimono jacket, called a haori, and would have been worn for the most formal occasions. The outer jacket is always a plain weave or solid color except for the family crests, but the linings offer a glimpse into the interests, hobbies, or dreams of its original owner. These jackets were usually commissioned by a design house and custom made.

A rich earth tone palette gives the design a solid, autumn, masculine feel. The folding fan shapes are filled with famous sites in Kyoto (Kiyomisu Temple, Kinkakuji (TThe Golden Pavillion) and Sanjo Ohashi (Sanjo Bridge). And there are two tea caddies, beautifully draped in patterned furoshiki wrapping cloths.

There is a small blemish on the back lining, see photo.

The outer jacket is a solid black silk with five family crests.

We display these men's haori inside out to reveal the lining - normally hidden from public view when worn, and only visible if glimpsed as it was taken off or hung up.

All of the stitching is hidden, so these jackets can normally be displayed or worn (in the West, at least) either way.
